The Macedonian Association of Agricultural Cooperatives together with the Cooperative Unions of Vojvodina and South Serbia started to implement the project entitled ”Improved production and quality of selected fruits and vegetables” within the framework of the Economic Development, Governance and Enterprise Growth Project, financed by USAID.
Within the project a process for certification with the GLOBAL GAP standard was started for the members of 12 agricultural cooperatives for apple and pepper production from North Macedonia and Serbia. GLOBAL GAP defines the quality standard in fruit and vegetable production. Adoption of Global GAP standard will enable the cooperatives to offer products to more sophisticated and higher margin markets. At the same time the GAP standard means sustainable agriculture through responsible use of pesticides, and environmental protection as well as higher consciousness for farmers’ health while spraying and operating with plant protection chemicals and other materials.
It is a very selective international certificate that testifies to the dedication and attention of the agricultural producers to the quality of the products as well as to all the main aspects of the agricultural cooperative: from the impact on the environment, to the management of the accounts, all the way to the safety of the workers. This protocol is shared in Europe by the most important industrial groups and the large retail trade, as it can meet the increasing needs of customers in terms of food safety and respect for the environment.
